Taking Your Tumbling Skills to the Next Level: Tips for Going Above and Beyond

Zia Cheer • January 1, 2025

At Zia Cheer, our tumbling programs are designed to be fun and recreational, offering a great space for kids to learn, grow, and develop their skills at their own pace. While our classes focus on building strength, flexibility, and technique, some athletes (and parents) may want to go the extra mile outside of class to see even faster progress.

If you’re looking to take your tumbling skills above and beyond, here are a few tips to keep in mind!

Progress Takes Time
First and foremost, tumbling is a journey, not a race. It takes time, patience, and consistent effort to develop the strength and flexibility needed to master skills safely. It’s completely normal for progress to feel slow at times—what’s important is staying consistent and celebrating small victories along the way.

Stretching and Conditioning at Home
One of the best ways to improve outside of class is by incorporating regular stretching and conditioning into your routine. Building flexibility and strength takes time, but a little bit of effort each day can go a long way. There are plenty of free resources online, like YouTube videos, that can guide you through effective stretching techniques or basic strength exercises tailored for tumbling.

Make it Fun!
Practicing at home doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Turn on some music, invite friends to join in, or set small challenges for yourself to keep it exciting. Tumbling is about having fun and pushing yourself to see what you’re capable of—so make it an activity you look forward to!

Support from Parents
For parents, if your child is looking to take their skills to the next level, your encouragement can make a big difference. Whether it’s reminding them to stretch, celebrating their progress, or simply asking about what they’re learning in class, your involvement helps build confidence and motivation.

Optional, Not Required
While these tips are helpful for athletes who want to go above and beyond, we want to emphasize that there’s no pressure to do more than what’s covered in class. Tumbling at Zia Cheer is all about enjoying the process and learning at a pace that feels right for each athlete. If your child is happy with the progress they’re making during class, that’s absolutely okay too!

Enjoy the Journey
Whether you’re tumbling just for fun or setting big goals for yourself, the most important thing is to enjoy the journey. Every stretch, every skill, and every attempt brings you closer to becoming the best version of yourself. Remember, progress takes time, and every small step counts.

At Zia Cheer, we’re here to support your tumbling journey—whether it’s in class, at home, or wherever your goals take you!
